An Interview with MINOE

We sat down with singer/songwriter MINOE and got to ask her a few questions...

How did you get your start in music?

I started singing and writing songs at around 6 or 7, I was a very musical child and my mom always encouraged me! I started to perform with bands and organize my own shows at around 16, then moved to Montreal from Halifax to pursue it more seriously.

How has Montreal influenced your sound and artist career?

I think the biggest influence Montreal has had on me is boosting my confidence and really making me feel like my dreams are achievable. I’ve met so many incredibly talented artists here that I’ve been blessed to work with. I really feel in my element when I’m with other artists now instead of feeling intimidated like I once did.

Tell us the story behind your new song?

“Wish i killed my ex boyfriend <3” is about a dream I had where I almost killed my ex but I stopped myself. I had recently found out that he had been abusive to women he’d been with since our relationship, which made me feel as if it was my fault somehow for not warning them? So the dream happened, I woke up and wrote the song which is actually about wishing I could have prevented him from hurting others. Turns out I am not much of a murderous lady, even in my dreams!

What’s your favorite thing to do on a Saturday?

If I’m not writing or performing, I like to just get outside and see some friends. My favourite days are spontaneous ones! If I don’t have to plan it out I won’t.

What artists influence your sound?

I listen to just about everything so it’s hard to say who exactly influences my sound. Right now though I’m really into Lykke Li, Lily Allen and Aerosmith!

What is one album that changed your life?

Maybe it’s a bit of a basic answer, but ‘Rumours’ by Fleetwood Mac had a huge impact on my younger self. I went through a major Stevie Nicks phase and named my first guitar after her! No regrets, I think most people can agree it’s one of the greatest albums out there and I still consider myself a Stevie stan.

What’s up next for you?

Now I’m preparing for the release of my EP! I don’t have a date yet but i’m hoping to get the project out by late august. It's been two years in the making and I’m so excited to finally release this body of work. :)
