An interview with j solomon

1. What made you want to pursue a career in music?

Growing up, I was always secretly interested in pursuing music, but I always had bigger focuses like school & sports, and I was scared of being made fun of for pursuing music in high school. When I was 16, I had a sports injury that took me out of playing/going to school for a few months, and during that time I really started to take my art more seriously. I came out of that recovery and started playing shows and recording music, and 5ish years later here we are.

2. Whats your favorite thing to do on a Saturday?

I really love to take my dog to the park, there's this dog run nearby that's right along the East River so it's a very pretty view– pretty cold in the winter months though.

3. What or who has influenced your sound?

Some of my favorite artists recently have been Adrianne Lenker, Fiona Apple, Buck Meek, and Death Cab For Cutie. I think what's been inspiring me most recently is trying to push myself out of my comfort zone and looking to create music that has a certain intensity and feeling of catharsis or release.

4. Where are you from?

I grew up in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, but I've been living in New York City for the past 4 years.

5. What is some advice you'd give to your younger self?

I would tell myself to go out and start playing shows and finding other kids who make music earlier on, and to learn how to play piano. And my biggest piece of advice to any young person in music is to just be a good person, good things happen to good people!
